Haemorrhagic & necrotic miocarditis with fibrin strands

Where: cardiovascular system

Possible causes: Glässer diseaseMulberry heart diseaseStreptococcal infections

This image corresponds to the thoracic cavity of a 6 weeks old weaner pig with grossly distended pericardial sac with straw-coloured fluid that contains fibrin strands. The surface of the heart displays multiple areas of haemorrhage giving it the appearance of a mulberry, hence the name of the disease. Areas of necrosis, looking like pale streaks on the heart can also be seen in this picture.
The only clinical sign seen in this case was are sudden deaths of animals in good body condition.
Additional vitamin E was added to the diet and the clinical signs disappeared.
