Thailand: pigs culled amid African swine fever fears

The Thai Livestock Department told the media that 200 pigs had been culled in the country's northern province of Chiang Rai.

The department said the culling of the pigs was a preventative measure after two pigs died mysteriously in a district of Chiang Rai, only 20 km from Myanmar.

Nopporn Mahakanta, chief of the provincial livestock office, said that the cull of the 200 pigs was in line with protocols to curb outbreaks of the African Swine Fever (ASF).

No outbreak of African swine fever among pigs in Thailand has yet been reported, though neighbouring Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia have all confirmed cases of the deadly disease.

Blood and tissue samples of the first pigs were sent on Monday to a lab in Lampang to see whether they had contracted African swine fever. Lab results could take about 14 days.
