Spain - Sanitary measures are established for early detection of swine herd diseases

The Spanish Board of Ministers has approved a Royal Decree establishing sanitary measures for the early detection of African swine fever, classic swine fever and swine vesicular disease. The Decree will also regulate a surveillance plan which will allow Spain to maintain its status as a “disease free” zone, with respect to those diseases.

Swine outbreaks of pandemic influenza A (pH1N1) suggest human introduction of the virus into herds. This study investigates a pH1N1 outbreak occurring on a swine research farm with 37 humans and 1300 swine in Alberta, Canada, from 12 June through 4 July 2009.

Detection of Porcine Endogenous Retrovirus (PERV) viremia in diseased versus healthy US pigs by qualitative and quantitative real-time RT-PCR

Previous studies have linked levels of porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERV) with poor health and disease in pigs. To determine the levels of expression of PERVs and their potential association with disease expression, real-time reverse transcriptase (RT) PCR assays were used to assess PERV-ABC, PERV-C and PERV-A/C levels in three commercial swine operations in the United States.
