European Union earmarks €250 million to combat animal diseases and better protect both human and animal health

Aiming to further strengthen the protection of human and animal health, the European Union earmarked today more than €250 million to support programmes to eradicate, control and monitor animal diseases in 2011. Member States endorsed the financial package proposed by the European Commission during today's meeting of the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCoFCAH).

For sustainable disease control, it is critical to prevent the spread of these pathogens between pig populations; therefore, a clear understanding of the role of aerosol transmission is needed along with information on how to reduce this risk.
