A new Animal Health and Welfare Board for England will bring experts including farmers, veterinarians, welfare experts and others from outside Government together with the Chief Veterinary Officer and civil servants to make direct policy recommendations on policy affecting the health and welfare of all kept animals such as farm animals, horses and pets.

Netherlands - Antibiotics in livestock farming: turning the corner?

FIDIN, the association for the suppliers of animal drugs, recently announced that antibiotics use fell by 12 percent in 2010, following a fall of two percent in the previous year. That is good news. The government wants use of antibiotics this year to be 20 percent less than in 2009, and to have halved in 2013.

Detection of Porcine Endogenous Retrovirus (PERV) viremia in diseased versus healthy US pigs by qualitative and quantitative real-time RT-PCR

Previous studies have linked levels of porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERV) with poor health and disease in pigs. To determine the levels of expression of PERVs and their potential association with disease expression, real-time reverse transcriptase (RT) PCR assays were used to assess PERV-ABC, PERV-C and PERV-A/C levels in three commercial swine operations in the United States.

Effects of transport conditions and vehicle design on the welfare and meat quality of pigs in western and eastern Canada

The objective of this study was to examine the influence of transport conditions on the behaviour, physiology and welfare of pigs in eastern and western Canada, in both summer and winter. Our goals were to evaluate differences between truck types, truck compartments and seasons in each region, and to use this information to identify problem areas and potential solutions.
