European Union - Fighting antibiotic resistance in livestock and pets

Resistance to antibiotics in livestock and pets has become a huge issue in recent years. To cope with this growing problem and the consequent treatment failures, Parliament issued a call on Thursday for more research and better monitoring of the effects of antimicrobials on food-producing animals and pets. It would also help if antibiotics were used less, stress MEPs.

Russia - New african swine fever outbreak in Krasnodar Krai

The specialists of the Rosselkhoznadzor Administration for Krasnodar Krai and Republic of Adygeya found 7 carcasses of 4-6 month old piglets at different stages of decomposition in the forest belt near the Settlement of Sokolovskoye, Gulkevichsky Rayon, Krasnodar Krai. The carcasses were disposed by burning and buried at the place of detection.

The objectives of this field survey were to evaluate the effects of several promising swine waste-management and treatment technologies on reducing Salmonella presence and populations and to characterize the diversity of Salmonella isolates recovered from the waste streams using serotyping and antibiotic-susceptibility analysis.
