EFSA: factors associated with Salmonella pen positivity

A European Union-wide baseline survey on Salmonella in holdings with breeding pigs was carried out in 2008. Now EFSA publishes the results from analyses of the associations of 19 pen- or holding- level factors and Salmonella positivity of pens in holdings with breeding pigs. Also the results from correlation analyses between Salmonella prevalence in breeding and in production holdings, from analyses of the Salmonella serovar distribution across the European Union, and from analyses of an additional within-holding prevalence study carried out by five Member States are also presented.

European Union - Report on antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic bacteria affecting humans, animals and food

Antimicrobial resistance, virulence-associated genes, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium isolated from piglets with diarrhea in Korea.

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium was isolated from diarrheic piglets in 2 periods, 2000–2001 (n = 25) and 2005–2006 (n = 17). To compare the characteristics of the isolates collected during the 2 periods, all isolates were tested for antimicrobial resistance, the presence of virulence genes, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns.

United Kingdom - VLA publishes the Salmonella in Livestock Production report for 2009

A total of 5,334 pig submissions were received by VLA/SAC during 2009, down from 5,761 in 2008 and 6,176 in 2007. Diagnostic pig submissions however (which generate the bulk of Salmonella incidents in pigs) actually rose by a fifth from 1,490 in 2008 to 1,797 during 2009.
