The results of the present study indicate that vaccination of pigs against erysipelas in the presence of antibiotics may result in a decrease or enhancement in the production of specific antibodies.

The study demonstrated that naive cattle, goats and pigs, in addition to antibody positive sheep, can be infected by HoBi-like virus via persistently infected calf and potentially transmit the virus.

Since the introduction of PCV2 vaccines in 2006, viral presence and viral loads have greatly decreased, and a genotypic shift dominated by PCV2b has occurred.

Under the conditions of this study, it makes no difference to protection whether PCV2 and PRRSV vaccines are administered concurrently. Concurrent vaccination is efficacious for controlling co-infection with PCV2 and PRRSV.

To increase efficiency, active sampling should be intensified (more animals sampled) and monitored fattening groups abandoned. This would significantly improve sensitivity and time to detection at comparable or lower costs.

This is the first case report in the United States associating SV-A with a clinical course of severe but transient neonatal morbidity and mortality followed by vesicular lesions in breeding stock animals.

Improving farmers’ clinical diagnosis ability does not appear sufficient to effectively reduce this risk.
