Since the first discovery of a wild boar that died from African swine fever (ASF) near Kirchhundem in the Olpe district in June 2025, wild boar that have been hunted or found dead have been tested for ASF as part of a statewide monitoring program. To date, over 45,000 animals across the state have tested negative. Around 600 animals have tested positive, all of them until now in the Olpe, Siegen-Wittgenstein, and Hochsauerland districts. Now, a new ASF-positive case has been confirmed in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district near Netphen-Grissenbach. The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, has now confirmed the suspected case.

The location where the dead boar was found is outside Restricted Zone II and within Restricted Zone I. The location is approximately 10 kilometers from other positive findings in the core area and about five kilometers from the state border with Hesse. So far, no other ASF-positive wild boar have been found near the location where the carcass was discovered (as of May 2).

Search teams from the state's ASF carcass detection dog unit, along with emergency personnel from the Siegen-Wittgenstein district, are now intensifying their search for further dead wild boar at the site, also using drones.

Intensive hunting has taken place in the area around Netphen in recent weeks as part of the ASF control measures. However, all other wild boar killed or found dead around Netphen have tested negative for ASF as part of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia's ASF monitoring program.
