USA - FDA issues draft guidance on the judicious use of medically important antimicrobials in food-producing animals

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued draft guidance intended to help reduce the development of resistance to medically important antimicrobial drugs used in food-producing animals. The draft guidance outlines the FDA’s current thinking on strategies to assure that antimicrobial drugs that are important for therapeutic use in humans are used judiciously in animal agriculture. The FDA acknowledges the efforts to date by various veterinary and animal producer organizations to institute guidelines for the judicious use of antimicrobial drugs, but the agency believes additional steps are needed.

Taiwan - Food and Mouth Disease

The Taiwanese veterinary authorities informed of the appearance of a foot and mouth disease outbreak in the country. The focal point is located on a pig farm in the Baozhong Township of YUN-LIN, with 1296 susceptible animals, and 112 confirmed cases.

According to the data of the Rosselkhoznadzor Territorial Administration for Krasnodarsky kray and the Republic of Adygeya the tests of pathological material from four five-month swine died during the period from June 02 to June 04 2010, belonging to Ye.P. Vlasenko living in village of Khamishki, Dakhovskoye settlement, Maikopsky rayon, the Republic of Adygeya, gave positive results for African swine fever.

Mexico - New investment for the prevention of animal disease

According to declarations made by the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food of Mexico, Francisco Mayorga Castañeda, it is foreseen that within the current year they will invest more than 554 million pesos in animal health and aquaculture, focused mainly on health campaigns, among others, against Aujeszky disease in pigs.
