Ukraine will strengthen border control with Russia and Belarus due to the threat of African swine fever

The Minister said that the reorganization of State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine provided the prevention of ASF entrance.

Ukraine will maximum strengthen control measures at the border with Russia and Belarus to prevent African swine fever. National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine and Cabinet of Ministers will discuss this issue at the meetings. Representatives of several ministries, agencies, regional and district administrations will be involved to solve the problem.

"At present, the possibility of African swine fever entry onto the territory of Ukraine is especially urgent. Thus, in Russia the losses caused by ASF amounted to 30 billion RUB for the last 7 years. Besides, this summer it was defined in Belarus. Therefore, we have to redouble efforts to protect the territory of Ukraine from the disease. Currently, there are around 4.4 million pigs in Ukraine. We should be aware of the results caused by the disease," said the Minister.

The Minister said that the reorganization of State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine provided the prevention of ASF entrance.

The Minister stressed the need to coordinate the maximum number of ministries, agencies and local authorities to monitor the movement of goods and people. This will help prevent ASF entrance to Ukraine. According to Mykola Prysyazhnyuk there is a need to strengthen the participation of State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service in the checks of goods imported to Ukraine.
