Russia bans pork imports from Belarus

The Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Inspection Service announced Friday that it was temporarily restricting pork imports from Belarus.

Deputy Head of the Rosselkhoznadzor Alexey Saurin sent a letter to the CVO of Belarus Dr. Yuriy Pivovarchik. The letter reads that pursuant to Article 8 of the Customs Union Agreement on veterinary and sanitary measures dd. 11 December 2009 and due to unfavourable situation on African swine fever on August 30, 2013 temporary restrictions will be imposed on transportation of pigs from Belarus to Russia, on their genetic material, pork products that have not undergone heat treatment at the minimal temperature of 72ºC for at least 30 minutes which ensures ASF virus destruction, feeds for pigs that have not been subjected to similar heat treatment.

The restrictions will be in force till the disease is totally eradicated in Belarus, or rules are approved to determine zoosanitary status (compartmentalization) of the Belarus pig farms, plants carrying slaughter of pigs, processing and storing pork products, or the Euroasian Economic Commission adopts a directly applicable regulation covering a common compartmentalization procedure for the CU-countries.
