Peru received official authorization from the government of Singapore to export pork and poultry meat to this Asian market, in a milestone that the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) and the National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA) describe as unprecedented for the national livestock industry. The opening was formally communicated during the visit to Peru of Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, and is the result of an evaluation process by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), which included technical audits of Peruvian slaughter establishments and a comprehensive review of the national sanitary system.

Access implies that Peru will be able to export animal protein to a market of more than 6 million consumers with high purchasing power and that depends almost entirely on imports to meet its food demand. Singapore imported poultry meat worth USD 415 million in 2024, with an average annual growth of 8.4% between 2017 and 2024; Brazil accounts for 70% of that market, indicating room for new suppliers.

The milestone has a concrete sanitary basis: Peru currently has 13 regions free of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) and maintains its status as a country free of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), recognition granted by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) in April 2025. Both conditions were key to passing the SFA evaluation, which requires sanitary guarantees at origin before authorizing any supplier.

SENASA indicated that it will work in coordination with the private sector to ensure that shipments comply with Singapore’s requirements, and confirmed that the opening of this market serves as a platform for ongoing negotiations with China and Japan, two destinations of significantly larger scale for Latin American animal protein.

For Peruvian pork producers, the next concrete step is the approval of slaughter plants that meet the food safety standards required by the SFA, a process that SENASA will need to coordinate with the private industry before the first shipments are carried out.
