The Cabinet of Germany has passed a new decree that has come into force this March regarding the use of antibiotics in livestock.

This new regulation on the use of antibiotics in animals should help to avoid the development of antibiotic resistances.

Among other aspects, the new regulation restricts the use of certain antibiotics that are especially important for the treatment of human infectious diseases (“last resource antibiotics”), as well as the obligatory nature, under certain conditions, of performing antibiograms as an important tool for the therapeutic decision making, helping in this way to optimise the therapy and to counter the propagation of resistances.
