Canada - Government supports farmers by investing in animal health

The Government of Canada is investing up to $2 million to prevent and contain animal diseases. The funding for the Canadian Animal Health Coalition for the West Hawk Lake Zoning Initiative will help to monitor the movement of animals and agricultural products between eastern and western Canada.

China reopens to U.S. pork

China this afternoon gave notice that it is ready to accept imports of U.S. pork, following negotiations between Chinese and U.S. officials in March that led to an agreement in which China pledged to reopen its markets to U.S. pork. U.S. pork produced on or after May 1 can now be exported to China.

The Unitat de Tuberculosi Experimental (UTE), Institut per a la Investigació en Ciències de la Salut Germans Trias i Pujol (IGTP) has developed a new experimental model in minipigs for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in collaboration with the CReSA. The mini-pig model highlights new aspects that could be a key to a better understanding tuberculosis infection control in humans.

European Union - Cyprus receives final warning to comply with veterinary medicinal products Directive

The Commission has taken further steps against Cyprus for being late with the implementation of the medicinal products for veterinary use Directive (2009/9/EC). A reasoned opinion has been sent to the government of Cyprus over their failure to notify national implementing measures as required by this Directive. Cyprus has been given two months to remedy the situation by adopting and notifying the necessary national measures.

China - Spread of foot and mouth disease

Since the first notification of the presence of foot and mouth disease in China, in March 2010, the OIE has reported the appearance of 10 new focal points spread throughout the country.
