Ukraine could increase meat production by 5% in 2012

Pork production could expand by 7.3%, to 750,000 tonnes.

Meat production in 2012 in Ukraine could grow by 5.3% compared to 2011, to 2.26 million tonnes, according to projections of the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry of Ukraine.

The ministry said that pork production could expand by 7.3%, to 750,000 tonnes, poultry output by 5.8%, to 1.06 million tonnes, while beef production will remain almost the same as in 2011, at 410,000 tonnes.

The ministry also said that the capacity of the domestic market in Ukraine would slightly increase, to 2.39 million tonnes. In particular, demand for beef will not change, remaining at 420,000 tonnes, while demand for pork will increase by 2.4%, to 865,000 and for poultry by 3.2%, to 1.06 million tonnes.

According to preliminary data from the ministry, imports of meat in 2012 could fall by 11.8% compared to 2011, to 217,000 tonnes. Imports of beef will remain unchanged at 20,000 tonnes, pork imports will decline by 11%, to 130,000 tonnes, and poultry imports will fall by 4.8%, to 60,000 tonnes.

The ministry also said that meat exports would grow in 2012 by 12.5%, to 90,000 tonnes. Exports of pork could rise by 15.4%, to 15,000 tonnes, those of poultry by 24%, to 62,000 tonnes, while exports of beef could decline by 28.6%, to 10,000 tonnes.
