Latvia confirms 3 new outbreaks of Classical swine fever

The outbreaks of classical swine fever are located in south east Latvia (Piedrujas parish, Kraslavas county and Svarinu parish, Dagda county).

The OIE has reported three outbreaks of classical swine fever in south east Latvia (Piedrujas parish, Kraslavas county and Svarinu parish, Dagda county).

Outbreak 1: On 23 November 2012, the veterinarian of this pig holding reported to the local competent authorities one dead fattening pig. On 24 November 2012, blood, post-mortem tissues and organ samples of the dead pig and three blood samples of alive pigs were taken and sent to investigation. On 26 November 2012 samples tested positive at the National Reference Laboratory for classical swine fever.

Outbreak 2: On 24 November 2012, the owner of this pig holding reported to the local competent authorities one ill fattening pig which was laying and did not want to eat. Blood samples were taken and on 26 November 2012 tested positive at the National Reference Laboratory for classical swine fever. On 26 November, blood samples from seven other domestic pigs in this holding were taken and sent to investigation.

Outbreak 3: On 26 November 2012 one domestic pig blood sample tested positive at the National Reference Laboratory for classical swine fever.

There are a total of six cases from a total of sixteen susceptible animals.
