Denmark: the number of fattening pigs drops

As of October 1st, the total swine census in Denmark was 12.3 million heads. There were no changes in the number of breeding animals, but there was a fall by 3% in the number of fattening pigs in comparison with the same period in the previous year.

In terms of real numbers, as of October 1st, the census of sows was 1,029,000 heads, with an important drop in the number of gilts (-6%, 194,000 heads). With respect to the lactating sows as of October 1st, a total of 209,000 lactating sows and 2,552,000 lactating piglets were recorded, and this means that each lactating sow had an average of 12.2 piglets. The number of piglets (less than 50 kg LW) was 5,362,000 (without changes), whilst the number of fattening pigs fell by 3% (3,106,000).
