As a result of the surveillance and control measures implemented on the farms located in the foot-and-mouth disease containment area, after the outbreaks of this disease in 2017, that include some of the departments in Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Casanare and Arauca, an outbreak of the disease has been detected on a farm located in the rural area of Sogamoso (Boyacá).

The farm has 18 susceptible animals, out of which a cow older than 3 years showed clinical signs compatible with foot-and-mouth disease.

The National Veterinary Diagnosis Laboratory of the ICA carried out molecular analysis (PCR) tests with a positive result, isolating a serotype O foot-and-mouth disease virus. The samples came from the affected animal. The virus was also isolated from two other animals on the same farm that were in contact with the sick animal.

After carrying out the genetic sequencing tests, it was established that the virus isolated from the current outbreak is related with the previous foot-and-mouth disease cases that appeared in 2017 in the containment area.
