Supporting livestock farmers and raising the number of domestic farm animals is one of the most pressing issues facing the struggling Czech agriculture industry, according to "Vision of Czech Agriculture After 2010," a report released by the Agriculture Ministry May 26.

On an annual basis, fresh and frozen pork is up 3.1% while shoulder roasting joints are up 40% and loin roasting joints are up 11.7%.

Based on the results of statistical survey on livestock and animal production in 2009, carried out by National Institute of Statistics, on December 1, 2009, as compared to the same date of 2008, cattle, pigs livestock and poultry registered falls, while sheep and goats livestock increased.

Swine stocks were recorded on the reference date of 1 December 2009 and yielded a total figure of 3 137 000 animals. This corresponds to a 0.5% decrease in stocks compared to the date of the last census in June 2009.

In 2009 5.597.000 pigs, 620.000 cattle, 80.200 calves, 290.000 sheep and lambs, 41.300 goats and kids and 978 horses, foals and other equidae were slaughtered.

A forecast from the Association of Danish Pig Producers shows that in 2015 exports of piglets will be 13.5 m. or as much as 65 % higher than in 2009.

Projections from the ministry’s livestock department suggest that on-farm pig numbers in Vietnam could rise from 33 million in 2008 to 57.6 million in 2020, taking the country’s annual pork production from 2.77 million to 4.12 million metric tons, as the demand for pork by Vietnamese consumers rises by 38% from 30.7 kilograms to 42.5 kilograms per person per year.

In the 1st quarter 2010, 130 881 tonnes of meat were produced, i.e. by 3.6 % less than in the same period of the previous year. A decrease of production was shown in beef (by 7.4 %), pig meat (by 4.7 %), and poultry (by 0.1 % only).

As of April 1, Canadian hog producers reported 11.6 million hogs on farm, down 2.1% from the same date in 2009. This is a continuing trend as year-to-year hog inventories have decreased since 2006.

The latest available figures for the number of pigs in the European Union show a decrease of 0.7% in the EU-24. The countries that have suffered the biggest decreases are: Czech Republic (-10,4%), Sweden (-5,1%), Romania (-4,5%), Hungary (4%) and Spain (-3,8%). Countries such as Denmark (5,6%), Holland (3,2%) and Austria (2,4%) have experienced an increase in the swine population.

The latest national statistics produced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on GB Animal Feed were released on 15th April 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

According to the State Statistics Committee pig numbers were up by 14.1%, to 7.85 million animals.

In December 2009, the pig population amounted to 65,918 heads, an increase of 0.6 per cent, or 407 pigs over 2008.

The latest figures published for the livestock census carried out on 15 November 2009 show a 10.6% decrease in the swine population in Belgium, dropping from 6,207,595 head in 2008 to 5,547,134 in 2009.

U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on March 1, 2010 was 64.0 million head. This was down 3 percent from March 1, 2009 and down 2 percent from December 1, 2009.

Meat production in the last quarter of 2009 decreased by 7.3 per cent to 3,639 tonnes. While pigmeat and broiler-meat production declined by 12.8 and 1.5 per cent respectively, there was an increase of 5.0 per cent in the production of beef meat.
