Romania – Decrease in pig numbers

Austria - Slight decrease in swine stocks

Swine stocks were recorded on the reference date of 1 December 2009 and yielded a total figure of 3 137 000 animals. This corresponds to a 0.5% decrease in stocks compared to the date of the last census in June 2009.

Vietnam - Swine is largest livestock sector

Projections from the ministry’s livestock department suggest that on-farm pig numbers in Vietnam could rise from 33 million in 2008 to 57.6 million in 2020, taking the country’s annual pork production from 2.77 million to 4.12 million metric tons, as the demand for pork by Vietnamese consumers rises by 38% from 30.7 kilograms to 42.5 kilograms per person per year.

European Union – Slight decrease in the European swine population

The latest available figures for the number of pigs in the European Union show a decrease of 0.7% in the EU-24. The countries that have suffered the biggest decreases are: Czech Republic (-10,4%), Sweden (-5,1%), Romania (-4,5%), Hungary (4%) and Spain (-3,8%). Countries such as Denmark (5,6%), Holland (3,2%) and Austria (2,4%) have experienced an increase in the swine population.

Belgium – Decrease in swine population

The latest figures published for the livestock census carried out on 15 November 2009 show a 10.6% decrease in the swine population in Belgium, dropping from 6,207,595 head in 2008 to 5,547,134 in 2009.

U.S. hog inventory down 3 percent

U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on March 1, 2010 was 64.0 million head. This was down 3 percent from March 1, 2009 and down 2 percent from December 1, 2009.

Malta - Meat production decreased

Meat production in the last quarter of 2009 decreased by 7.3 per cent to 3,639 tonnes. While pigmeat and broiler-meat production declined by 12.8 and 1.5 per cent respectively, there was an increase of 5.0 per cent in the production of beef meat.
