Brazil – Increase in pig meat exports

In 2009, Brazilian exports of pig meat reached 607.49 thousand tons, which is an increase of 14.75% in volume compared to the same period of the previous year, although the value dropped by 17.09%.

We have just added a new section, Pig welfare, to pig333, on the European legislation about the minimum standards for the protection of pigs (2001/88/EC of 23/Oct/2001 and 2001/93/EC of 9/Nov/2001). This section has an interactive format of questions and answers starting from a photograph, and has been prepared by Paolo Candotti.

Finland – Agreement to improve pig welfare

Finland’s Ministry of Agriculture has arrived to an agreement with representatives of the swine industry (farmers and meat industries) to improve all aspects related to pig welfare. Producers and industry have made a commitment to revise and improve conditions.

United Kingdom - Research on 'country of origin' labelling published

The Food Standards Agency has published new research about country of origin labelling. The Agency commissioned a package of research to find out more about how people understand and use food labels, including ‘country of origin’ labels. The results will both improve the information we have on this subject and also help to inform discussions about a European proposal on food labelling.

Netherlands - More pigs from Denmark

The majority of imported pigs in Holland come from Denmark. During 2009, Holland imported three times as many piglets, with imports from Denmark being nearly five times higher than the year before.
