PIC Europe Health Assurance Manager

PIC is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Han Smits to the position of Health Assurance Manager for PIC Europe. Han will take responsibility for the management of PIC’s European Health Program, working closely with PIC’s international network of pig Veterinarians.

European Union - Rural development: €5 billion in total injected into rural development programmes

The Rural Development Committee has voted on the last proposals from Member States/regions for using EU Recovery Plan and CAP Health Check funding and other transfers within the CAP to address issues including the economic and dairy crisis, and climate change. In the period October 2009 – January 2010, all rural development programmes were modified and the additional funding of about €5 billion is now ready to be invested in agriculture, the environment and broadband in rural areas. EU steps up border controls on imports of non-animal origin

All EU Member States will step up their border controls on a number of pre-listed products -ranging from peanuts to fruit and vegetables- originating from outside the EU in an effort to limit possible harm to human and animal health. These controls are foreseen in Regulation (EC) No. 669/2009 which enters into application and provides, for the first time ever, for a set of common rules for official controls on imports of certain feed and food of non-animal origin.

Malaysia - FMD in Pahang

The Pahang Veterinary Department in Malaysia has imposed a ban on the movement of livestock, especially in Kuantan and Pekan following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the state.
