China - COFCO expected to produce 6 Million tons of feed within 5 years

During the recent years, COFCO, China's state-owned foodstuffs import and export holding companies, is dedicated to establishing a large comprehensive corporation by investing pig industry. Its reared pigs have arrived more than 40 million, with the consumed feed coming up to 12 million tons. It stated last year that slaughtering pigs in the future will be 30 million per year, which meant a yearly increase of 9 million tons of feed consumption.

Germany – Report on antibiotic resistances in the food chain

The National Reference Laboratories for Salmonella and Antibiotic Resistance at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) tested Salmonella isolates from diagnostic submissions for antibiotics resistance and assessed them according to epidemiological criteria between 2000 and 2008. The isolates originated mainly from animals and foods but also from feeds and the environment.

Europe harvest 12m tonnes down

European Union - BfR, DTU and Anses enter into cooperation agreement

On 7 December 2010 the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the French Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire de l’alimentation, de l’environnement et du travail (Anses) and the Food Institute of the Danish Tekniske Universitet (DTU) signed a cooperation agreement. The objective of the German-French-Danish cooperation is to render the joint activities in the field of food safety, also on the European level, even more effective and efficient than in the past.

Chinese delegates visit East Yorkshire

Staff from Yorkshire based pig breeding company JSR were “honoured” to host a group of business delegates visiting from the Xiangfan province of China. The delegates were visiting the North East to meet with JSR as part of European business trip encouraging investment in the Xiangfan Province.

United Kingdom - Real welfare indicators for pigs

BPEX and the University of Bristol are leading a major research project to develop a system of assessing pig welfare using welfare outcomes as indicators. Along with the current welfare ‘inputs’, such as stocking density and pen enrichment, producers will be able to demonstrate welfare from the pig’s perspective.
