What role does Ukraine play in the world trade of raw materials?

Ukraine is among the world's leading producers and exporters of corn, wheat, and barley.

Ukraine ranked as the world's sixth-largest corn producer in the 2020-2021 season with 29.5 million tons, after the United States, China, Brazil, the European Union, and Argentina, and was the world's fourth-largest exporter of corn after the U.S., Brazil, and Argentina. Ukrainian corn exports totaled 24 million tons.

Regarding barley, Ukraine ranked as the fifth-largest producer behind the EU, Russia, Australia, and Canada and was the fourth-largest exporter behind the EU, Russia, and Australia, with 4.2 million tons exported.

As far as wheat, Ukraine was the world's seventh-largest producer and sixth-largest exporter with 21.01 million tons.

EU grain imports from Ukraine

At the EU level, according to DG-Agri data, from 2016 to 2020 Ukraine was the second-largest supplier of grain to the EU with a share of 26%, behind Brazil (33%).

For the 2020/21 season, of the nearly 15 million total tons of corn imported by the EU, Ukraine was the second-leading origin with 6.54 million tons.

EU imports of wheat and barley are less significant, with a total of 2 million and 1.24 million tons imported respectively, of which 626,691 t and 52,000 t were from Ukraine.

For the 2021/22 marketing year Ukraine is the main supplier to the EU of corn (52% of the total quota), the second supplier of barley (9%) and of wheat (18.9%), and the first supplier of sorghum (38%).
