With the steady drop in pork prices, farmers have ignored having their pigs vaccinated against blue ear disease. The situation may result in an outbreak in the southern region, said Hoang Van Nam, head of the Animal Health Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

He said the disease this year has been erratic in occurrence and was first detected in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai on January 11 and has since spread to 123 communes in 13 provinces nationwide, ravaging 34,000 pigs and 21,700 of which had to be destroyed.
