Surge in China's pork production in first quarter

The country's live pig inventory has seen increases for 6 consecutive quarters.

In the first quarter of 2021, China produced 171.43 million live pigs, an increase of 30.6% over the same period last year (+40.15 million). The output of pork was 13.69 million tons, an increase of 31.9% (+3.31 million tons).

With the implementation of various policies and measures to stabilize the production and supply of live pigs, the country's live pig inventory has continued to recover and has increased for 6 consecutive quarters, returning to 94.2% that of 2017 levels.

At the end of the first quarter, the national live pig inventory was 415.95 million pigs, a year-on-year increase of 94.75 million pigs (+29.5%). There were 43.18 million breeding sows, a year-on-year increase of 27.7% (+9.37 million sows), representing a 3.8% increase over the end of the fourth quarter in 2020.
