Russia confirms foot and mouth disease in cattle and swine

Foot and mouth disease virus serotype A was found in the village of Molodezhny (Zabajkal'skij kray). The village Molodezhny is 25 km from the border with China. Zabajkal'skij kray is part of the buffer zone where vaccination is practiced. The animals were vaccinated in October 2012.

According to nucleotide sequencing followed by phylogenetic analysis, the isolate A/Zabajkal'skij/RUS/13 belongs to FMD type A, South-East Asia genetic lineage, topotype Asia.

A total of 169 cattle and 7 pigs from 2245 and 2053 susceptible animals are affected.
