Two weeks ago, the Port Authority of Tarragona asked stevedoring companies "to activate the necessary mechanisms to decongest the Port". Since Monday, and to meet the demands of the stevedores to mobilize more staff, the stevedoring companies have begun to implement additional measures that will increase the capacity of stevedoring by 30%, as announced last week.

The companies are exploring the implementation of further complementary measures related to the organization of work and training to incorporate more manpower as soon as possible to cope with a very intense month of October in the docks of Tarragona, as an unusual 400,000 tons of additional imported cereals are expected due to the poor harvests in Spain and France.

The Port of Tarragona has the highest volume of cereal traffic in Spain and the Mediterranean, which is destined for the manufacture of feed for farm animals. Annually, some 140 million farm animals in the hinterland of the Port of Tarragona - which includes Catalonia and Aragon, but also Northern Valencia, La Rioja, Navarra, and the eastern part of both Castillas - depend on the supply of cereal from Tarragona.
