According to data from the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), livestock production accounts for 54 percent of the value of the primary sector (livestock production plus transformation) and generates 350,000 direct jobs direct more than one million indirect jobs.

Francisco José Gurría Treviño, General Livestock Coordinator, said that about 1,300,000 tons of meat products are produced annually in our country.

He declared that, following instructions by the head of SAGARPA, Enrique Martínez y Martínez, work will be done to improve the regulatory framework in order to increase productivity in the sector, open new international markets and, helped by the surveillance carried out by the National Service for Agroalimentary Public Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA), protect the country from the introduction of pests or diseases.

He explained that meat is the third largest agricultural export, after tomatoes and avocados.

He stressed that Mexican meat is present in Japan, with 90,000 tons of pork, exported in 2014, and in Korea —30,000 tons; both destinations generated more than $ 600 million.
