The Ministry of Rural Development said Tuesday that the decision to ease the rules came after consultations with the EU and Germany.

Mandatory testing was announced on Jan. 19. Germany stopped the sale of poultry, eggs and, as a precaution, pork, from thousands of farms in early January after excessive levels of dioxin were found in eggs and some chicken.

With the new rules, hog and pork importers should notify food and animal health authorities two days in advance of the expected arrival of new shipments, and authorities could perform random checks of shipments deemed potentially hazardous to health.
