Germany: increase in the organic livestock production

The organic pig meat production reached 23,000 tons (+1.7%).

According to a recent analysis carried out by the German Agricultural Market Information Association (AMI) commissioned by the German Agriculture and Food Agency (BLE) on the structure of the organic production sector in Germany, in 2011 the number of organic farms has grown again, reaching 22,506 farms, a 2.6% more than the previous year.

In 2011, and with respect to the previous year, there was an increase by 2.5% of the organic beef production, totalizing 40,500 tons, and also a rise in the case of the organic pig meat production, that reached 23,000 tons (+1.7%). According to the AMI, the organic milk production rose to 657,000 tons (+10.4%). The AMI also points out that due to the increasing demand for organic eggs this sector has expanded, and in 2011 some 2.9 million hens (+25%) have been counted, with the resulting increase by 7% of the organic egg production, that rose to 783 million units.
