Germany: increase in the number of slaughtered pigs

The number of pigs slaughtered in 2014 grew by 0.2% (112,600 heads), reaching 58.7 million animals.

Germany reached its all-time high of meat production in 2014. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that a total of 8.2 million tonnes of meat were produced in commercial slaughterhouses. This was 102,800 tonnes, or 1.3%, more than in 2013. The main factor contributing to this increase was poultry production, although beef and pork production grew too.

The number of pigs slaughtered in 2014 grew by 0.2% (112,600 heads), reaching 58.7 million animals, and generating 5.5 million tonnes of pork: 0.3% more than in 2013 (+14,900 tonnes), but the all-time maximum value of 2011 was not reached (5.6 million tonnes and 59,6 million pigs).
