Germany: fewer farms and fewer pigs

The pig census has decreased by 2% while the number of farms has dropped by 5.5%.

Data from the German Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) puts the number of pigs on November 3, 2019 at 25.9 million head, indicating a 2% decrease or 519,200 less pigs in comparison with the same period last year. Fattening pigs represented 44.9% of the total census (11.7 million animals). Compared with November of 2018, the number of fattening pigs has decreased by 218,500 heads (-1.8%). The number of piglets on November 3, 2019 stood at 7.7 million piglets.

The number of pig farms was 21,100, a new decrease by 5.5% (-1,200 since November 2018). In November 2017, the number of pig farms was 23,500, meaning that in just two years, 2,300 farms have been lost (-9.9%).
