The handbook divides antibiotics into 3 categories:

  • Category 1: first choice antibiotics, including neomycin.
  • Category 2: use only if it is not possible to use Category 1 antibiotics.
  • Category 3: antibiotics to be avoided in pigs. It includes colistin.

Veterinarians shall use Category 1 antibiotics as the first option.

Use the data provided by the diagnostic laboratory if there is not a current resistance determination available. The determination of resistances must be a part of the veterinary diagnosis regarding the animals on the farm.

When antibiotics are prescribed, the veterinarian must make sure that the treatment is effective.

Animal welfare must be guaranteed with a responsible antibiotic consumption.
