Further measures to promote even higher standards of animal welfare in Denmark were launched earlier this month with a new welfare policy for the pig industry.

The five new focus areas are:

• A 20% reduction in mortality rates by 2020
• A 10% reduction in antibiotic consumption by 2013 (per pig)
• Loose housing systems for sows in all units
• Measures to encourage the use of sick pens
• Action behind the words – greater focus on how pig producers can enhance their standards of animal welfare.
