The WOAH’s (OIE) Scientific Committee has recommended its 180 member countries that Brazil is granted the foot-and-mouth disease-free status with vaccination.

If this happens, 25 states and the Federal District will be deemed of free foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination. Santa Catarina had already been deemed free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination by the WOAH in 2007.

The decision will be announced at the WOAH’s General Meeting, that will be held in Paris from May 20th to May 25th, and the free of foot-and-mouth disease certificate shall be delivered on May 24th.

Also, as foreseen in the National Program for the Eradication of the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (PNEFA), Brazil’s next great step will be to remove the vaccination against this disease. As of May 2019, Acre and Rondônia, as well as municipalities of Amazonas and Mato Grosso, will start to remove the vaccination. The forecast is that in May 2021, all the country stops vaccinating its herds, and that in 2023 the whole country is granted the foot-and-mouth disease-free status without vaccination.
