The Information Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced on January 21 that Pingyuan County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, reported an African swine fever (ASF) outbreak that was suspected to have been due to illegal transportation.

The positive result was diagnosed by the Guangdong Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center. At the time of the outbreak, the farm had 1015 piglets; 214 were sick and 214 were dead.

A team of experts has been sent to the area to carry out monitoring and traceability work. The local area has activated an emergency response mechanism in accordance with requirements, and adopted measures such as blockade, culling, and disinfection.

The last ASF outbreak in China reported to the OIE occurred on October 22, 2020 at a highway checkpoint in Sichuan.
