After the year 2020 marked by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumption and key variables of the national and global economy, 2021 brought a strong recovery in world economic activity and the return to normalcy of international trade flows, which resulted in a strong increase in food demand that impacted both prices and volumes of grains traded.

Grain shipments

In this context, and despite the difficulties imposed by the level of the Paraná River and the production setbacks suffered by some of the main crops during the last season, the country shipped a total of 60.66 Mt of grains in 2021, 7% more than the volume shipped in 2020, reaching an all-time record, surpassing the 2019 level of 60.3 Mt.

Broken down by grain type, corn shipments totaled 38.4 Mt, more than 2 Mt higher than the volume shipped in 2020 (+6%) thus reaching the highest historic volume. Shipments of common wheat totaled 11.6 Mt, 13% over the volume shipped in 2020 and only below the record of 2017. Soybean shipments totaled 5.2 Mt, a 22% drop compared to the previous year. Barley shipments totaled 2.95 Mt, a 14% improvement over the 2020 mark, while sorghum shipments totaled 2.1 Mt, the highest volume since 2013. Finally, 0.1 Mt of sunflower was shipped, 26% below the previous year's record.

Principal destinations

Asia once again emerged as the leading destination for Argentine grain shipments, receiving 52% of the total, equivalent to 31.8 Mt (+6% vs. 2020). Second was the Americas, which accounted for 26% of total shipments (16.1 Mt, +18% vs. 2020). Africa was third with shipments of 12.2 Mt and Europe was fourth with 616,419 t.
