Argentina: Analysis for the expansion of pork exports

The meeting was useful for making an assessment at a sectorial level and for analysing the main aspects to be improved for the opening of new markets for the local pig production and industry.

The meeting, summoned by the Pig Directorate of the Livestock Subsecretariat, under the care of Mr Rodrigo Troncoso, and that was attended by representatives of the sectorial chambers and of the pig exporting industry, started with the statement of a detailed outlook of the main pig sector export figures in 2017.

In 2017, the 6 million slaughtered heads barrier was exceeded, with 566,084 tonnes of carcasses with bone. According to the data provided by the Livestock Subsecretariat, this entailed a year-on-year rise by 8.4% in comparison with 2016 in a context where the consumption per capita showed a growth by 10%. The exports of the pig sector reached, during this period, 14,562 tonnes: 22.33% more in comparison with 2016 in terms of volume. In turn, the exports of the pig sector grew by 87%, based on the number of pork exports, that were 235% higher than in 2016.

Afterwards, the Secretary, Ms Bircher, together with the International Agro-Industry Relations Subsecretary, Mr Maximiliano Moreno, and representatives of the SENASA, presented the progress in the negotiations for the opening of new markets. The most interesting ones are China, Singapore and Vietnam, but the current situation regarding Canada, Mexico, Ethiopia, Serbia, South Africa, The Philippines, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and the European Union (EU) was also set forth. As of today, Argentina has more than 40 open markets for the commercialisation of pork and pork products and by-products, among others.
