Farrowing quarters: notes on the card wrapped in a plastic bag

Wrap the sow's card in a clear plastic bag and write down the data with a thick marker

Goal

Speed up the registration of the data in the farrowing pens by wrapping the sow's card in a clear plastic bag and writing down the data with a thick marker. This idea is given by the Navarons Farm, in Barcelona (Spain).

Explanation

The daily registration of the farrowings, losses and adoptions of piglets on the sows' cards in the farowing quarters can entail a great deal of time if we do not have an quick registration system. It is frequent to introduce the cards in plastic covers so they do not get dirty, so each time we want to write down something we lose a lot of time.

A very useful option is to add a small card just to include the current farrowing data (liveborn / stillborn / mummified / adoptions). When the farrowing has ended, we will use this small card to enter the data in a computer.

Another option is to write down the data with a permanent marker on the plastic bag used to protect the card. Once we have weaned the sow we will be able to transcribe the data and enter them in a computer. In this way we can write the data with only one hand and quickly.
