United Kingdom - BPEX launches pork labelling campaign

BPEX has launched a campaign to encourage processors and retailers to make country-of-origin labelling clearer on pork products. The campaign comes after a YouGov survey revealed that consumers find labelling on pork products confusing and are concerned that products containing imported pork that does not meet minimum UK welfare standards can legally be labelled as ‘British’ or ‘UK’ produce.

USA - Pork packer margins deteriorate

This has been a tough year for meat-packer margins, especially in the pork sector, according to the Livestock Marketing Information Center. LMIC notes that packer margins have suffered dramatically this year, averaging less than half of those posted in 2008.

EU - Commission welcomes adoption of feed regulation that will further strengthen food safety in the EU

The new legislation, based on a Commission proposal from 2008, considerably simplifies the existing procedures and it will help promote innovation and competitiveness in the European feed sector. It is also expected to lead to a more integrated single market for feed by reducing the administrative burden for feed operators. The regulation was endorsed by the European Parliament on February 5 and is expected to enter into force later this year.

Australia - Computer model looks at classical swine fever outbreak in feral pigs

Headed by Professor George Milne of the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, researchers at The University of Western Australia (UWA) have concluded that a classical swine fever outbreak, starting in north Queensland, could spread widely through Australia’s 20 million feral pigs, potentially posing a risk to Australia’s domestic pig population.

United Kingdom - Farming under debate in House of Commons

The debate was only the second on farming in six years. It covered many of the issues affecting livestock farming including TB, EID, cost sharing, bluetongue vaccination, labelling, the environment, fallen stock, food security, recruitment and training, regulation and procurement.

Denmark - Statistics for 2008 published

In 2008, Denmark had approximately 5,800 farms with pig production. The farms produced a total of 27.4 mill pigs. The co-operatively owned slaughterhouses slaughtered 19 mill pigs (19.6 mill in 2007).
