FAO - Global platform for food security revitalized

Members of the FAO Committee on World Food Security (CFS) have agreed on a wide-ranging reform. The reform aims to make CFS the foremost inclusive international and intergovernmental platform dealing with food security and nutrition and to be a central component in the evolving Global Partnership for Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition.

EU - First wave of proposals for using fresh European Union funding for rural development

The Rural Development Committee approved a first wave of proposals from Member States/regions for using fresh European Union funding for rural development. The Member States/regions in question have proposed amendments to their Rural Development Programmes (RDPs) to make use of extra funding provided by the Health Check of the Common Agricultural Policy and the European Economic Recovery Plan (EERP), agreed in November 2008.

VIV Europe 2010 back to its roots in Utrecht

VIV Europe 2010 will take place from April 20 - 22, 2010 in the Jaarbeurs Utrecht, The Netherlands. The international exhibition on innovative animal husbandry aims to be the ultimate meeting place for international top decision makers in the feed to meat industry. This year two special themes with related conferences will be presented at the exhibition, Eggs! and Meat Safety. Up to 400 companies from 32 different countries have already booked a stand, covering about 75 % of the total exhibition floor.

Spain – Slight fall in swine population

The latest figures from the swine census published by the Spanish Agriculture Ministry show a slight decrease in the swine population during the first six months of 2009. This decrease is mainly due to the fall in the number of piglets.

Nucleus expansion in the Philippines

To meet unprecedented demand for the prolific AC1 hybrid gilt in the Philippines, Wellisa Farms has invested 15 million Philippine pesos (over £200,000) to expand its nucleus herd from 300 to 700 sows to increase production. It expects sales to double in 2009.
