AASV Announces 2010 Officers

Dr. Paul Ruen was installed as the president of the AASV at the association's annual meeting in Omaha, Neb. He succeeds Dr. Butch Baker who is now immediate past president. Dr. Randy Jones has ascended to president-elect. The newly elected vice president is Dr. Tara Donovan.

European Union - FVO final report in relation to the import of pig meat from Brazil

The objective of the mission was the evaluation of the food safety and public health controls in place as well as certification procedures in relation to potential exports of pig meat from Brazil to the European Union. This potential export was evaluated in the State of Santa Catarina (SC), which since 2007 has the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) status "free from foot and mouth disease (FMD) without vaccination".

Netherlands – Decrease in the use of antibiotics in livestock

The use of antibiotics in livestock decreased by 2% in 2009 compared to the previous year, while at the same time the bovine, porcine and poultry populations increased by 2%, 1.3% and 0.2%, respectively. In 2008, the use of antibiotics had already decreased by 7% compared to 2007.
