Ireland - Positive outlook for agricultural prices but input costs rising

Speaking at the conference Dr Cathal O Donohue, Head of the Teagasc Rural Economy and Development Programme, said: "2010 was a very good year for Irish farmers with output values up for all sectors and the average family farm income for 2010 is expected to return to 2008 levels, an approximate 40 per cent increase on the 2009 level. Food exports have been very strong, with agri-food exports growing faster than other exporting sectors."

Brazil - Pork exports decrease in 2010

According to data published by the Brazilian Meat Producers and Exporters Association (ABIPECS), throughout 2010 the volume of pork exported was 11,04% less than in 2009, falling from 607,5 thousand tons in 2009 to 540,4 thousand tons last year.

Mexico - SAGARPA and farmers invest 900 million pesos in bio-digestors

In the last 3 years, the Mexican Secretary of Agriculture (SAGARPA), through the Shared Risk Trust (FIRCO), has earmarked 300 million pesos for the installation of 305 bio-digesters on 305 farms. Keeping in mind that for every peso donated by the federal government, the producers provide two, the total investment in the installation of bio-digesters increases to 900 million pesos.

One year to celebrate the veterinary profession

This year marks the 250th birthday of the veterinary profession. The European Commission’s Directorate General for Health and Consumer Policy (DG SANCO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) join forces to organise a series of events to celebrate the anniversary and highlight the diverse role of veterinarians across the world. Their partnership begins with the dissemination of six video clips promoting the profession to the public.

The future common agricultural policy (CAP), now being debated by EU institutions, must ensure food security for all citizens, maintain the vitality of rural areas and guarantee food production throughout the EU, say MEPs in a resolution drafted by Daciana Octavia Sârbu (S&D, RO), and approved in plenary on Tuesday.
