One year to celebrate the veterinary profession

This year marks the 250th birthday of the veterinary profession. The European Commission’s Directorate General for Health and Consumer Policy (DG SANCO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) join forces to organise a series of events to celebrate the anniversary and highlight the diverse role of veterinarians across the world. Their partnership begins with the dissemination of six video clips promoting the profession to the public.

Canada - Quebec hog producers’ carbon footprint below world average

Quebec pork producers have taken the initiative to assess their carbon footprint in response to consumer concerns over issues of greenhouse gas (GHG) generated by pork production. Results of a study by OCO Technologies found this footprint is below the worldwide average. The carbon footprint for pork production in Quebec is 4.16 kg of CO2 produced per kg of pork carcass.

Russia - The Rosselkhoznadzor imposes temporary restrictions on import of pigs and porcine from Germany

Currently, 1478 establishments in Germany export their products to the Russian Federation. The Rosselkhoznadzor requested German Veterinary Service to provide information specifying establishments that have been exported their live animals, feed, pork and poultry meat as well as finished meat products containing pork produced in the territory of Germany since November 1, 2010, excluding products each batch of those was tested for dioxin by German Veterinary Service with negative results.

China - Feed output rises in November 2010

According to the data from National Bureau of Statistics, Chinese feed industry output 16.93 million tons of compound feed in November 2010, 31.2% up on the same month in 2009 and 4.8% higher in comparison with October 2010.
