Working meeting with BRICS representatives

According to Rosselkhoznadzor, a meeting was held on the 25th of March on the sidelines of the 59th Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures in Geneva (Switzerland). The international BRICS association includes five fast growing countries: Brazil; Russia; India; China and the Republic of South Africa.

The meeting was of informal character and was arranged in order to discuss some major epizootic problems of the global community, i.e. African swine fever spread and difficulties at the pork market caused by the disease within the EU territory. Representatives of the BRICS countries exchanges their views related to control of dangerous animal diseases and emphasized importance of the BRICS consolidated position within the WTO and the OIE taking into account intensified competition at the global food market.

The negotiations were considered constructive and the parties believed it was reasonable to coordinate their positions on veterinary and phytosanitary trade measures, especially when it comes to improper attempts of some third countries to interpret the SPS standards to the advantage of the most developed WTO members. The parties confirmed their intention to develop cooperation between the competent organizations within the BRICS and make such meeting regular.
