Sow inventories around the world in 2023

Significant increases in breeding stock inventories are expected in Mexico and Brazil, and China's breeding sow inventory is expected to grow 2.5%.

According to the latest USDA estimates published last October 12, China's sow inventory for 2023 is expected to increase by 2.5% with respect to 2022, reaching 41 million head. On the other hand, for Brazil* an increase of 2.0% is projected with an inventory of 3.04 million head, while for Mexico an increase of 2.7% is foreseen, reaching 1.32 million head, thus surpassing Canada (1.23 million head) and South Korea (1.02 million head). Japan's stock is estimated at 0.8 million head, representing an increase of 1.4%.

On the other hand, the USDA projects decreases in sow inventories for several of the main world producers such as the European Union, which is expected to see a 1.6% decrease with an inventory of 10.7 million head. Likewise, for the United States (6.08 million head) and Canada (1.23 million head) contractions of 0.7% and 0.8% are estimated, respectively. Russia, South Korea, and the United Kingdom are expected to see inventory decreases of 1.4%, 0.8%, and 1.2%, respectively.

*The inventory figure for Brazil includes sows in modernized and backyard farms.
