Recent announcements by the US pork packing industry indicating that they will no longer purchase pigs fed ractopamine have changed the ability to market show/exhibition pigs to major packers.

The Ohio State Fair and several county fairs have issued a ban on ractopamine to help make show pigs more marketable. The requirement is that the pig has never been fed or exposed to ractopamine sources from the time of birth to the time of harvest.

The council advises showman to clean feeders, barns, and trailers, removing traces of ractopamine to avoid being disqualified for accidental digestion by cross-contamination.
