The European Commission has published the Annual report on food frauds 2016, that gathers the activity of the EU Food Fraud Network, created as a consequence of the horse meat crisis in 2013, and the Administrative Assistance and Cooperation System (AACS).

According to this report, in 2016, 243 cases were exchanged by the AACS, of which 156 were considered food frauds: 147 from food and 9 from feed. Most of the fraud cases were due to the unfulfillment in the labelling of the product, specifically in its composition (42 cases) and name (6), but there were also cases of fraud due to the replacement of ingredients in the product (11), adding of non-declared substances (8), falsification of documents (9) and the use of unauthorised treatments or processes (9).

According to the product category, meat and dairy products (chicken and chicken products excluded) were the foods with more fraud cases (28), followed by fish and fishing products (22), fats and oils (20), fowl and fowl products (19), and milk and dairy products (17).
