Spain: new increase in pork production

Pork production grew by 3.5%, and the number of slaughtered pigs by 4.09%.

Meat production in Spain in the first trimester of 2019 has reached 1,905,740 tonnes, this entailing an increase by 5.4% with respect to the same period in 2018, when 1,808,197 tonnes were produced.

Of the total figure, 1,269,595 tonnes are pork, with an increase by 3.47% with respect to 2018, followed by fowl, with 432,565 tonnes, and beef, with 160,876 tonnes.

Regarding the number of slaughtered animals, and in the specific case of pigs, between January and March 2019, a total of 14,208,389 heads have been slaughtered, this entailing an increase by 4.09% in comparison with the same period in 2018 (13,650,271 heads). Catalonia still is the main producing region, with slaughterings amounting 5,810,412 heads, followed by Castile and Leon, with 2,210,781 heads, and Aragon, with 2,070,498 heads.
